Job Shadows - Description
A Job Shadow is a THREE-PART program that enables students to explore specific career interests through observation at a work site.
1. Introduction to Job Shadowing. Training Students are required to obtain parent and teacher approval, then complete a Job Shadow training session at school covering the following:
2. The Work site Placement. Once a student selects a Job Shadowing site, the Career Centre Manager contacts the employer to make

3. Job Shadowing Follow-up and Debriefing. It is important to help students reflect, analyze, draw conclusions from their Job Shadowing placement. This one-hour session at school features the following topics:
1. Introduction to Job Shadowing. Training Students are required to obtain parent and teacher approval, then complete a Job Shadow training session at school covering the following:
- Confidentiality training, appropriate dress, punctuality, manners
- Telephoning employers; how to arrange a visit
- Questions and how to ask them
- Safety on the work site (hazard recognition, WCB form completion)
2. The Work site Placement. Once a student selects a Job Shadowing site, the Career Centre Manager contacts the employer to make
initial arrangements. The student is then responsible for:
- Contacting the employer to confirm time, date, location and appropriate dress
- Asking questions regarding the advantages and disadvantages associated with this type of employment
- Observing and experiencing a typical day in the career they are shadowing
- Completing the WCB form PRIOR to the start of the job shadow placement
3. Job Shadowing Follow-up and Debriefing. It is important to help students reflect, analyze, draw conclusions from their Job Shadowing placement. This one-hour session at school features the following topics:
- Personal analysis of the Job Shadowing experience
- Information for Employers
- Personal action plan - future career research
- Discussions with others regarding various career issues (e.g. cooperation on the job site, work environments, skills for success, etc.)

Who?
Students in grades 10 to 12 are eligible to participate in Job Shadowing.
Why?
Job Shadowing helps students establish personal goals for the future. Students with personal goals are less likely to drop out of school and more likely to value their education.
How?
Job Shadowing placements can either be a half-day or a full-day.
Where?
At your place of employment.
In School District #23 over 1000 secondary students and over 500 employers are actively involved in the Job Shadowing Program each year.
Job Shadowing Checklist For Employers
- Introduce student to staff with an explanation of Job Shadowing
- Provide an opportunity for the student to discuss the day's experience
- Discuss job entry requirements, advancement opportunities, advantages and disadvantages
- Explain company policies, safety factors, and personnel organization
- Explain the background and nature of your business
- Provide a variety of observations/experiences
